  • Dear Lin:
I think I may have to leave my job temporarily to provide full-time care
Answer - learn about the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). FMLA provides job protection for employees who must leave their jobs for family medical concerns, such as providing care for a critically ill family member.

  • Dear Lin:
My Mom is starting to have problems chewing should I start feeding her baby food?
Answer: Baby food is kind of bland, it's a good choice in a pinch. However, you can just feed them whatever you are eating or whatever they are used to eating by running it through the blender. There are also food grinders made for babies that are portable and you can even bring them with you to a restaurant.
  • Dear Lin:
My husband is incontinent, should I use diapers and those plastic disposable bed pads?
Answer: If you are using the plastic diapers and not the disposable briefs and the plastic bed pads underneath to protect the bed - you might find that your husband will start to get rashes and other skin breakdown sooner. I would recommend that you use the reusable bed pads that are a mixture of cloth and some sort of water resistant material. The cloth breaths a lot better and therefor not as much heat will be drawn to the area and then moisture won't get trapped as easily.
  • Dear Lin:
My wife will suddenly become angry about something that happened twenty years ago as though it were today. I can't convince her that it was resolved long ago it just exacerbates the argument, what do I do?

Answer: Well, listening without reacting is your first line of defense and your wife will feel validated, secondly don't take it personally. After listening patiently shift their focus, direct them to something that happened earlier that day, someone you saw, something on TV. You'll be surprised at how easily you can shift someone's focus no matter the age or whether they suffer from memory loss or not.
